There’s something about summer that feels full of potential — maybe it’s the longer days, the iced coffees, or that hint of freedom in the air. If you’ve been meaning to start your writing journey (or restart it), this is your sign.

Here are five writing tips to help you embrace the season and grow as a new author:

1. Create a Ritual, Not a Schedule

Schedules are great, but life happens. Instead of rigid time blocks, build a ritual. Maybe it’s lighting a candle, putting on a playlist, or brewing tea before you write. This signals to your brain: it’s time to create.

Tip: Even 10 minutes of consistent writing is better than a perfect hour that never happens.

2. Ditch the Pressure of Perfection

New writers often feel they need to “get it right” from the start. But guess what? Nobody does. Your first draft isn’t meant to be perfect — it’s meant to exist. Give yourself permission to write badly, awkwardly, beautifully, messily. Your inner editor can wait. Right now, just get the words on the page.

3. Start Small and Build

You don’t have to write a novel right away. Begin with a short story, a scene, or a dialogue exchange between two characters. Writing is like building a muscle — start light, then add weight.

Writing Prompt:

Your character hears a song they haven’t heard in years. What memory does it unlock?

4. Find (or Build) a Writing Community

Whether online or in-person, connecting with fellow writers can keep you inspired, accountable, and encouraged. Share your wins. Talk about your struggles. Writing doesn’t have to be lonely. You can even create a “writing buddy” system with someone — weekly check-ins, prompt swaps, or virtual writing sprints.

5. Read Like a Writer

This summer, pick up a few books in the genre you love. But don’t just read — study. What makes the dialogue feel real? How does the author build suspense? What makes the character arc satisfying? The best writers are also active readers.

In Closing...

If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to write your story, this is it. Don’t let self-doubt win. Your voice matters. Your story deserves to be told. So light that candle. Pour the coffee. Open the document. And write like summer depends on it.
